Rape a one-day-old baby due to superstition

Interview with Betty Makoni by Zara Majidpour
Betty was raped at age of six and at nine her mother was killed by her father. Her strong personality and refusal to be a victim helped her fight for her education, currently holding two bachelor degrees.
She did not only architect her own future but as a rape survivor fought for thousands of girls and women who are victim of violence and assisted many of them. If something happens to them she feels pain in her heart and she deals with the pain by writing poetry. She is not only a poet but Betty Makoni is a girl child right activist.
She is founder and director of Girl Child Network Zimbabwe (GCN) and Chief Executive Officer of Girl Child Network World Wide, an organization that champions the rights of the girl child in Zimbabwe and world over. Quote from Betty Makoni’s website (1).
Betty Makoni has received many awards since 2003. She received CNN Heroes Awards 2009.
I interview Betty Makoni recently and had the following questions:
Q: In some African countries like Zimbabwe or South Africa there are some people who believe that if a man with HIV/AIDS rapes a virgin he will be cured. The youngest girl you saw was a day old baby. Was there any connection between this baby and that belief? Will you share this story?
Betty Makoni: First of all I want to confirm that, yes; there was a very strong connection between the baby who was raped and the myth. What happened was near our offices in Chitungwiza, a high-density suburb in Zimbabwe which is about 30 km from the capital city Harare, we have an adjacent village called Mayambara village. In an early morning of August 2006 we were awoken to the fact that a child had been found dumped.
Q: You were raped at age 6 and your mother asked you to remain silent. Why do some women encourage girls to remain silent instead of speaking out against sexual abuse?
Betty: What really happened in my own case of rape is that this man had not only raped me, but had raped 9 other girls in the neighborhood. This means that 10 mothers had kept silent. I think with me it was a situation where my mother lived in a situation of domestic violence, and she had been the one to ask me to go out and sell at night. So in the unlikely event that she was going to open up, my father was going to use that as an excuse for abusing her in the home. She had been really tortured in the home through beatings and extramarital affairs and my mother kept silent.
I can see many women who keep silent find themselves in marital relationships that are fragile, abusive and there is no alternative. Sometimes having to keep quiet is a way of not silencing the child, but a way of reaching an amicable situation in the home where you are married, ensuring nothing can be used as an excuse for abuse. The burden of caring for children very much lies with mothers. Mothers take responsibility for everything that happens to children, especially in an African community. So for a mother to pronounce herself is going to cause her to be mocked in society and taken as an outcast. That really also adds to the situation where they are discriminated against already from a gender perspective. The silence is not an option. The silence is mandatory because of the economic and social situation. There is no other person to provide for your children should the men send you out. This is a shame on women more than anyone else.
So I can say to a greater extent that you always find ways of breaking silence. In my case I would always find my mother speaking to our neighbor many times. She tried to reach out to talk to someone. This was not something she could easily break silence because she was a secure married woman and mother. To her, the rape was in the past and served as a lesson. It is something that I have taken as a story, but to her it was a serious case where she could have lost her marriage.
Q: You teach girls to have a voice instead of being victims and remaining silent. You build empowerment villages which provide a future to girls who are sexually abused. What is the reaction of men in your society regarding your work?
Betty: I think initially the reaction was quite mixed. I was in a situation where the school head of where I taught, and where the first club was formed, did not want anything to do with girls meeting on their own. It was always regarded as a place for loose girls, for girls who were rebellious against culture. In any case, there is nothing in our community without being endorsed by men and boys. Initially it became difficult to convince anyone that this space was very critical to girls opening up and talking.
The better part of my work was characterized by winning over men: school teachers, politicians, parliamentarians. I think I won almost 90% of men in Zimbabwe, but the 10% of men that remained were the arrogant ones. Those were the rapists and their accomplices, the ones who were walking scot-free. From those men I got a lot of backlash. That’s why even my work to bring high-profile rape cases in Zimbabwe was so difficult. You were labeled a liar, a fraud, an evil woman. Anything that was negative you were labeled.

The man who is the most famous white woman in South Africa

Evita Bezuidenhout, also known as Tannie Evita, is well dressed woman with beautiful accessories, long eyelashes and high heels shoes. She was born in Bethlehem in the Free State in 1935.
Evita married Dr. JJ de V Bezuidenhout and have three children, De Kock, Izan and Billie-Jeanne. Billie-Jeanne married Leory Makoeloeli and has three black children. Her son Izan is an active member of the AWB and her other son De Kock is with the Gay Liberation Movement.
Evita Bezuidenhout was recently awarded the Living Legacy 2000 award in San Diego for her contribution to the place of women in the last century. Mother Theresa and Hilary Clinton are past honorees of this award. (1)
Who is Evita and who is behind her? Pieter-Dirk Uys is the creator of Tannie Evi
ta. He is a South African actor, author and HIV/AIDS activist. Uys was born in Cape Town in 1945 and has been in the theatre since the mid 1960s. He lives in Darling, where converted the old railway station into a cabaret venue called Evita Se Perron.(2)It is not necessary to be a South African and familiar with the unique sense of humor to understand and enjoy his performance. He has his own way to talk to his multiracial audience.
I interview Pieter-Dirk Uys recently and had the following questions:
1- Evita Bezuidenhout is one of the most famous female political figures in South Africa in recent decades. What motivates you to a play female character?
PDU: She was created in 1978 as a means of getting the truth out in a time when censorship stilled us with fear. Also being a man wearing woman's clothing attracted the right offended attention.
2- You play a strong female character who criticized the apartheid regime and the current government. What problems did you face then and now?
PDU: Acting always creates problems. The fact that most of the action was deemed as dangerous made it even more exciting. Just remember I was a white Afrikaner. If I had been black I would have been killed. I was just censored, banned, insulted, shouted at and in many cases supported by those whites who also wanted to end apartheid.
3- What will you do if you become the president of South Africa?
PDU: Hope to quickly wake up from that nightmare!
4- You have been traveling around South Africa and talking about sex and Aids with millions of school children. Why did you decide to break the taboo of talking to children about sex and Aids?
PDU: It started in 2001 when President Thabo Mbeki became an Aids-denialist and so created even more confusion and fear. HIV/Aids became the new apartheid. By going to schools one was confronting those who had not yet been endangered by a sexual life - or so I thought. And using humour meant that the kids laughed at their fears and listened. I also used words that had never before been heard in a school hall, but once they understood where the minefield was - fucking - they followed the facts. It is also free, so no one in government can threaten cancelling subsidy or sponsorship.
5- You had an interview with Nelson Mandela, an icon and one the most respected men in the world. How did you feel when he told you that “you are one of my heroes?”
PDU: That interview on television - and it was Evita who did the interview - was remarkable. He agreed to it because he said he had something important to say and no one watched the news. But they watch Evita. And in the show she asked him for a New Year message for the Nation. 1996. He gave a message of support to the newly created non-racial police force, being traumatized by daily killings. It was genius. As for his comment? Better than a first class ticket to heaven.
6- What is Pieter-Dirk Uys’ legacy?
PDU: To remind the person who is frightened to have an opinion, tell the truth, question inhumanity or laugh at fear that in a democracy anything is possible, good and bad, but at least one is in charge. So never look away. Confront fear and live with humour as a weapon of mass distraction!

Green politics the answer to all of the woes in Lebanon

The Green party of Lebanon (GPL) is a political party which was founded by Philip Skaf in 2008. Nada Ghorayeb Zaarour was a vice president of the Green party 2008-2011. She was elected as the first female president of a Lebanese political party in September 2011
Q: You are the first female president of a Lebanese political party. What is the public opinion of you as a female politician to enter a traditional male domain?
Nada Zaarour: Women in politics is not a very unfamiliar facet of Lebanese Politics however, it is not very common. Unlike many of our neighboring countries, Lebanese women are well integrated in the social and economic sector, however in their presence in the political work is still shy. As a female president of Lebanon's green party, my election as a party leader sent a lot of positive vibes, that everyone embraced happily among men and women.
Q: As a co-founder of the Green Party of Lebanon, what motivated you to get involved with the Green Party?
Nada: As a Lebanese citizen I was always concerned about our environmental problems falling unnoticed among all the political and economic instability our country has faced through the past two decades. As time passed by and I became more involved in the environmental field, my attraction to green politics and green values started to grow, and with that I started noticing the gaps in our system as a whole and our political system in specific .To me the answer to all the woes in Lebanon clearly seemed to be Green Politics, and every day I got more convinced in the idea.
Q: The Green Party is one of the newest Lebanese political parties. What is the public opinion of this party?
Nada: True, our party is one of the newest parties and political movements in Lebanon. Unfortunately, it is not very common for a group of people or a civil network, sharing common values and believes, to form a serious political movement. In my opinion, that's a shame, because we really need to pump new blood and innovation into our system, we really need to create more space for participation and offer more options to our people. The green party as a political movement is still mistaken sometimes with a tree-hugging NGO, but at many other points we are understood as a political party.
Q: Your party is a political party and will run in the 2013 parliamentary elections. What does the Green Party stand for?
Nada: There are four pillars that define green politics which constitute the backbone of our party values are namely economic wisdom, sustainable development, justice, democracy, and non violence.
As citizens of Lebanon we have big responsibilities upon our shoulders, the Responsibility of simply being Lebanese. We should think of Lebanon as a blessing not as a place where education is too expensive, where economic distribution is unfair, where electricity is not continuous, where infrastructure is poor, where the rich are monopolizing the markets, where opportunity is not equal. We should think of Lebanon where living conditions are fair, where human rights are respected and Women's Rights are not a document awaiting parliamentary ratification as part of a package deal shared by sectarian greed.
To be able to think of our nation as such we should be able to dream. And to this dream is called the Green Party. Our party is a party that cares for public education, for health care, for public transportation, for the economy, for independent minds.
As a green political movement we are a true alternative, because we offer the answer, because we are determined to give back to the environment we come from.
2013 will be our first step towards approaching tangible solutions, to many natural rights for every Lebanese citizen. 2013 will be Lebanon's first encounter with the free choice of voting for an agenda that carries the people's concerns to the decision making institution, to the parliament, to the people's power.
Q: In your opinion, why aren't Green parties popular in Middle Eastern Countries?
Nada: The Middle Eastern States are states still bound to a lot of social traditions, norms and values. This is a beautiful thing that gives us our identity and preserves our history and this is what makes us today. But from my point of view, norms and traditions should only be key players on the social and cultural levels. Politics and progression are at a different angle of the spectrum. Politics in our region is still a tradition and more specifically political figures and institutions are still traditional in their symbolism and function. All of this is not offering a new political thought and a new insight for the people's choice and that's the main reason behind the shy presence of Green Parties in the Middle East. But I am very positive and I believe in the young people in this part of the world and I see there's a big future for these parties coming ahead.
